Five Cents looks at Hormuz, oil, and global inflation: why reported U.S.–Iran contacts matter, what a shipping reopening would actually require, and how disruption can reach energy bills, freight costs, and food prices worldwide.

The place to start is the strait itself, because its importance is far bigger than its size.

The Strait of Hormuz sits between Iran and Oman, connecting the Persian Gulf to the wider ocean. Around 20 million barrels a day of oil and petroleum products passed through it in 2025, alongside a major share of global liquefied natural gas trade.

Much of that energy heads to Asia, where large importers rely on Gulf supply for transport, industry, and power generation.

Oil can be rerouted to a limited extent. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have pipelines that bypass Hormuz, but their capacity covers only part of the normal flow.

Liquefied natural gas is harder still. Qatar and the UAE depend heavily on passage through the strait, and there is no easy alternative route for most of those exports.

That is why Hormuz is not just an oil story. It is a concentrated pressure point for energy, shipping, insurance, and food production.

The immediate diplomatic picture remains uncertain. President Trump said the United States was pausing planned strikes because negotiations were beginning and a future arrangement could reopen the strait.

Iran, however, says there are no direct negotiations with Washington. Its position is that Oman has been discussing a temporary safe route.

That gap matters. Markets can react to the possibility of de-escalation, and oil prices did fall after the U.S. announcement.

But shipowners, insurers, crews, and banks need more than an announcement. They need evidence that vessels can pass safely, predictably, and without conflicting military or legal orders.

Oman is central here. It is not simply a neutral messenger. It is one of the two coastal states, and it has long-standing channels with Tehran.

A narrow, Omani-mediated arrangement could create a corridor for commercial traffic without resolving the wider conflict or Iran’s nuclear dispute.

But a corridor is not the same as normal shipping. A vessel may technically be allowed through and still be commercially unable to sail.

Operators have to assess the risk of missiles, drones, mines, detention, inspections, crew safety, sanctions exposure, and war-risk insurance that may be too expensive or unavailable.

Even after fighting eases, the bottlenecks can linger. Mines need clearing. Ports can face queues. Tankers and liquefied natural gas carriers may be out of position.

Banks may demand extra compliance checks. And a few days without attacks will not immediately convince every insurer or shipping company to return.

That is why the most useful signal is not a political declaration. It is sustained commercial traffic: rising daily transits, resumed liquefied natural gas loading schedules, falling insurance premiums, and no new detentions or attacks over time.

From there, the inflation link becomes clearer. Higher crude prices raise the cost of petrol, diesel, jet fuel, and marine fuel.

Those costs then travel through trucking, aviation, shipping, factories, and retail supply chains. Gas shortages can also raise electricity and heating costs in import-dependent markets.

Businesses do not pass every increase on to customers, but persistent energy costs often show up in transport charges, packaging, chemicals, manufactured goods, and eventually household budgets.

As a rough guide, a sustained ten percent rise in oil prices can add around zero point four percentage points to global headline inflation, though the result varies widely by country and by how long the shock lasts.

Food is the slower but potentially more lasting part of the story. In the short term, higher diesel, refrigeration, and shipping costs make food more expensive to move and store.

The deeper risk is fertilizer. Gulf gas and chemical industries supply ammonia, urea, and other agricultural inputs.

If fertilizer cargoes are delayed during planting periods, farmers may use less of it. The effect on harvests may then emerge months later, not immediately.

That means oil prices could retreat after a ceasefire while food markets still face pressure later in the year or into the next one.

There are several possible paths from here. A credible de-escalation could gradually lower oil and gas prices, though freight and insurance would likely take longer to normalize.

A selective passage arrangement could restore some flows while keeping costs high and leaving the route exposed to political pressure.

And if talks fail or attacks resume, energy markets, Asian gas buyers, fertilizer supply, and global inflation would all face renewed strain.

The key points are simple. Hormuz matters because it carries oil, but liquefied natural gas is often less replaceable.

A ceasefire does not automatically restore commercial confidence. And the food impact may arrive later, through disrupted fertilizer and weaker harvests.
